40 YEARS OF THE “RADOVIĆ” EVENING STAGE
The “Radović” Evening Stage celebrates 40 years of theatre for adults this year within one of the most important theatres for children and young audiences in the region — Malo pozorište „Duško Radović“.
For four decades, this stage has existed as a space of artistic freedom, bold repertoire and contemporary theatrical language — a place where different generations of artists and audiences meet, and where theatre remains a living, engaged and thoughtful act.
Founded in the mid-1980s, the Evening Stage quickly became a place where contemporary dramatic texts, experimental forms and powerful acting performances were presented. Audiences kept returning because of the relevance of its themes, the immediacy of its expression and the feeling that the stage is in constant dialogue with the time in which we live.
A STAGE THAT HAS ALWAYS PUSHED BOUNDARIES
The Evening Stage opened on March 7, 1986, with the production “Misterija… Beograd” directed by Ivana Vujić.
In the years that followed, the stage hosted works by Branislav Nušić, Mikhail Bulgakov, Václav Havel, Sławomir Mrożek, Ivo Andrić, Charles Bukowski and Niccolò Machiavelli, as well as contemporary Serbian authors such as Dragoslav Mihailović, Duško Radović, Bora Đorđević and Milovan Vitezović.
The repertoire has always been diverse — ranging from drama and cabaret to monodrama, contemporary dance and music-theatre projects — guided by a clear idea that theatre must take risks and constantly search for new forms.
FROM THE DIFFICULT NINETIES TO A NEW MOMENTUM
The 1990s brought crisis and war, which led the theatre to focus primarily on productions for children. Nevertheless, the Evening Stage remained an important part of the institution’s identity.
A new momentum came in the early 2000s, when Malo pozorište „Duško Radović“ introduced the Stage for Young Audiences and once again strengthened its evening programme for adults.
During this period, productions from the Evening Stage appeared at major festivals such as BITEF and Sterijino pozorje, as well as numerous international festivals, confirming the artistic significance of the stage.
THE EVENING STAGE TODAY
With the arrival of director Bojana Karajović and artistic director Damjan Kecojević, the “Radović” Evening Stage has gained a clearly defined and artistically strong repertoire profile.
Contemporary dramatic texts, socially engaged themes and distinctive directorial poetics form the foundation of a programme addressed to both young and adult audiences, without avoiding the complex questions of contemporary society.
The current repertoire includes the productions Ako pčele nestanu sa lica zemlje (directed by Anja Suša), Sjaj zvezda na plafonu and Dečak sa koferom (directed by Damjan Kecojević). These productions have received numerous awards and international invitations, attracting strong responses from both critics and audiences and confirming the relevance of the Evening Stage in today’s theatrical landscape.
Alongside its repertoire development, the Evening Stage has also received a new visual identity created in collaboration with the agency New Moment. The campaign was awarded the Silver UEPS Award in 2025 for integrated communication in culture.
Forty years later, the “Radović” Evening Stage remains what it has always been — a space for contemporary, bold and vibrant theatre.
